Why I Became an Independent Insurance Agent

After 11 years (all right, I probably figured it out after four or five years) as a captive agent, I realized that it wasn’t possible to be a real advocate for my policyholders with only one company to offer my clients. It was my job to bring customers to my parent insurance company, and I was obligated to give business only to that company.

As an independent insurance agent, however, I represent and have access to multiple insurance companies and work on behalf of my clients to find them insurance policies that are most suitable - based on price, product offerings, claims ratings, financial ratings, and general service. And I can provide both Personal Market and Commercial Market insurance products.

I also have access to the Excess and Surplus market, so I can place even the most difficult risks. As such, my clients can have all their insurance needs handled in one place. As an independent insurance agent, I’m truly a counselor, not just a salesman; I’m a professional insurance advisor.
